There’s something fishy going on in Cleethorpes…

by Steve Beasant on 26 August, 2015

Fantastic feats of fish filleting will be on show in Cleethorpes this August bank holiday weekend as the UK’s top fishmongers compete for the title of British Fish Craft Champion.

North East Lincolnshire Council is delighted to be hosting the British Fish Craft Championships®, bringing together the nation’s best fishmongers from independent shops to supermarket chains, to test their skills, speed and accuracy.

This is a unique event in the British fishing calendar currently celebrating its 63rd year. Attracting a cross section of the industry – from wholesalers to processors, farmers to retailers, there’s something for everyone, including the general public.

Marquees will be erected in Cleethorpes Leisure Centre car park where the following activities will take place over the three-day event:

  • Saturday 29 August, 10am to 6pm filleting and cooking demonstrations
  • Sunday 30 August, 8.30am to 7pm competition and crowning of the British Fish Craft Champion.
  • Monday 31 August, from 10am filleting and cooking demonstrations.

Fish from the competitions will be on sale to the public to take home.

The Championships will be held on the Sunday, and is an opportunity to see the best seafood preparers in the country battle it out to be crowned the British Fish Craft Champion of the Year 2015. There will be 12 competitions in all, organised by the National Federation of Fishmongers and sponsored by Seafish.

Gary Hooper, Immediate Past President and Competition Organiser at the National Federation of Fishmongers, said: “We’re delighted to be coming back to Cleethorpes, and look forward to welcoming competitors and public alike. With lots to see on all three days, I hope people will come down, take a look in and grab themselves some fantastic fishy bargains.

“The competition this year is going to be hotly contested – with more than 50 entrants, only the best will win. I’d like to wish all our competitors good luck, and thank them for their support.”
