Tom Brake MP to Battle for Seniors’ Rights

by Steve Beasant on 25 July, 2016

Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington Tom Brake joined MPs from all parties at Age UK’s ‘Age Champion’ charity event. The event in Parliament enabled MPs to discuss issues currently affecting 65 and overs, and how communities can become more inclusive of aging generations in the future.

In Carshalton & Wallington 13,828 local residents are aged 65 and higher. Over a third live alone and nearly a quarter are in fuel poverty. 32.6% of these people do not have access to private transport which hampers their chances of an active later life. Age UK Age ‘Champion’s’ campaign seeks to highlight these issues in order to ensure that quality of life is made a priority.

Tom Brake MP, after the event said,

“I am keen to champion the issues of my elderly constituents in Parliament.  Some struggle, even here in Carshalton and Wallington with crippling loneliness.  This affects 920 people aged 65 and over, and 12,267 people of the same age group have a long term health problem. We must do more to improve the lives of those who have endured the most.”

London Borough of Sutton is fortunate to have one of the country’s most effective organisations at representing senior citizens; Sutton Seniors Forum.  They hold regular meetings and events for Seniors and can be contacted on 020 8401 2741.
