Commenting on the release of new figures that show that NHS Trusts recorded a deficit of £461 million in the first quarter of 2016, the Liberal Democrat Health Spokesperson, Norman Lamb MP, said:
“These latest figures showing that NHS trusts overspent by almost half a billion pounds in the first quarter, even with new bailout funding available to them, underlines the Government’s continued failure to get to grip on the NHS funding crisis.
“Hospitals are at breaking point across the country. They are still in the red and missing key targets, and the simple truth is that the £8 million the Government has committed by 2020 will not be enough to sustain NHS services.
“These dismal figures emerge on the same day that the County Hospital in Stafford announced that it would be suspending its A&E services for children. This dreadful rationing of care is becoming more commonplace, and the Government should be asking itself: where will this all end?
“Health leaders are all united in their stark warnings about the perilous state of NHS finances. The system is in desperate need of more, and the Government must sit up and take notice.”
