The saga of the ‘wibbly wobbly way’ is becoming a ‘debacle’

by Steve Beasant on 28 October, 2014

It was reported yesterday that further work has been carried out on the ‘crazy paving’ in Grimsby town centre and there is a warning from North East Lincolnshire Council that further works might be necessary.

Station Approach

The Grimsby Telegraph reports:

Contractors have carried out what North East Lincolnshire Council has described as “preliminary investigative works” on the road surface near the junction of Station Approach and Bethlehem Street.

It came just over a week after a temporary repair was made with tarmac to the paving next to a water cover near the junction, after some of the slabs became loose.

A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesman said: “Contractors have carried out preliminary investigative works on the paving near the junction of Station Approach and Bethlehem Street.

“There is likely to be more similar work in the next few weeks and in the meantime the paving has been reinstated to its original appearance.”

At the September meeting of North East Lincolnshire Council held on 18th September, Liberal Democrat Councillor for the East Marsh Steve Beasant asked the Portfolio Holder for the Environment Dave Watson: “How many times had the new slabs on Station Approach been dug up?”

On 30th September, the Grimsby Telegraph reported upon the exchange between Councillor Watson and Steve:

David Watson dismissed suggestions that the paving at the junction of Bethlehem and Station Approach had been relaid on ten separate occasions.

Councillor Steve Beasant (Lib Dem, East Marsh) said he had been told this by taxi drivers.

However, Mr Watson told full council that there had been three occasions when small areas of the paving had been relaid. He added that the whole “table” at the junction had been dug up and relaid once and steps taken to reduce the risk of another failure.

Mr Beasant described the road as “wibbly wobbly way” and claimed it was a danger for cyclists, adding: “When are we going to come up with a solution to rectify it?”

Mr Watson replied: “If Councillor Beasant has any critical areas that are causing concern then we will seek to rectify them.”
