Following the news that David Cameron created 13 new peers in his resignation honours list, the Liberal Democrat Leader Tim Farron said:
“Only a few weeks ago we had a vote about taking power from a supposedly an unelected body and giving it back to the people.
“Yet those who get angry about Europe seem to be happy to look the other away when it comes to the democratic outrage that is the system of appointments to the House of Lords.
“The Lords does important work scrutinising legislation but people who make our laws should be elected by the people they are there to serve. I am urging the Government to bring forward a bill to bring accountability through direct elections to the Lords.
“Cameron’s appointments disaster over the last few days is yet another blow to public confidence in politics. It is time for Lords reform.”Leave a comment
