Norman Lamb: BMA report shows Govt failing to tackle childhood obesity

by Steve Beasant on 13 May, 2017

Deep cuts to public health budgets and the ubiquity of unhealthy lifestyles in Britain has created a “ticking time bomb” for the NHS, the British Medical Association (BMA) have warned.

Commenting on the report, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary Norman Lamb said:

“This Conservative government’s approach to public health has been nothing short of disastrous.

“They have slashed councils’ public health budgets and published a paltry childhood obesity strategy which lacked any concrete measures to tackle advertising of junk food to children.

“The government is inexcusably letting down our young people, harming their well-being and life chances.

“The Liberal Democrats will take action to tackle childhood obesity, including restricting the marketing of junk food to children, restricting TV advertising before the 9pm watershed and closing loopholes in the sugary drinks tax.”
