Nasty Conservatives clobbering those in care

by Steve Beasant on 21 May, 2017

Liberal Democrats in Great Grimsby have accused the Conservatives of clobbering elderly people in care by forcing them to sell their homes to pay for social care.

The Conservative Manifesto commits the Government of Theresa May to clawing back care costs when a person in care has assets (including the value of their home) worth over £100,000. The claw back will be made on the person’s death, forcing many families to sell family homes.

“Many family members have given up work to help look after elderly parents,” said Steve Beasant, Lib Dem candidate for Great Grimsby.

“They have helped keep their loved ones out of hospital, helping the NHS free up beds, and instead receive help from social care services in their home. These carers often live in the family home.

“The Conservatives are now proposing to strip these people of their family home. This is the true nature of the Conservative Party shining through – the Nasty Party.

Liberal Democrats will instead increase income tax by a penny in the pound to ensure there is an extra £6 billion a year for the NHS and social care.

“With a landslide Conservative majority in prospect, their plans to strip elderly people of their homes show just why we need a strong opposition. Jeremy Corbyn’s failed in that role. A vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote for a Strong Opposition to the Conservatives.”
