The official death toll of the Grenfell Tower fire has been announced as 71.
Shelter have also revealed that the government are failing to provide housing for disadvantaged families, as only 41,530 homes built in 2016-17 were affordable,19% of the total.
Wera Hobhouse MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Communities and Local Government, said:
“Now that we know the full scale of the tragedy in Grenfell we must fight to ensure that it is never repeated again. This has to be a wake-up call to the government.
“The government must bring in serious new measures to protect people living in tower blocks from fire, and provide the funding for them where necessary.
“But we must also do far more to address the underlying causes, including the chronic neglect of social housing in this country.”
