Following the Number 10 lobby briefing after when it was reported that the government would allow MPs new rights to demand votes on Henry V111 powers, the Liberal Democrats said this wouldn’t stop Brexit being a stitch up between Whitehall and Brussels.
Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesperson Tom Brake MP said:
“This is a welcome but minor concession on an issue on which the government knew it could not carry the House. The Leave campaign said that Brexit would mean ‘taking back control of our laws’, but since the referendum, ministers have done everything they can to undermine our parliamentary democracy and push through laws without proper scrutiny.
“Liberal Democrats will continue to fight for full parliamentary oversight of the Brexit process, at the end of which it should be the people, not politicians, who have the final say. That’s the only way to ensure this isn’t a stitch up between Whitehall and Brussels.”
