Lib Dems: May might as well take Corbyn to Brussels with her – they agree on a hard Brexit

by Steve Beasant on 11 December, 2017

The Liberal Democrats have challenged the Labour leadership to back its amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill tomorrow, which would provide the opportunity to remain in the Single Market.

Speaking in the House of Commons today, Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable told Theresa May:

“Can I suggest to the Prime Minister that to strengthen her hand in the next stage of [Brexit] negotiations, she might want to suspend tribal politics and invite the leader of the opposition and his frontbench colleagues to join the negotiating team?

“Whatever their tactical differences, they agree with each other on the fundamentals of Brexit, including withdrawal from the Single Market and Customs Union, as disastrous as that may be.”

NOTES:

The Lib Dem led amendment is number 124 and would prevent the government from making changes to any laws that relate to the Single Market up to and including the day marked for Brexit. This would prevent obstacles being put up to prevent Britain’s continued membership of the Single Market. It is has cross-party support, including a number of Labour backbenchers.

Challenged on the Sunday Politics yesterday over whether Labour would back the amendment, Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry refused to offer a straight answer. The Labour leadership’s position on the Single Market and Customs Union remains ambiguous, fuelling suspicions that Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell want a hard Brexit.
