Chemo cuts will cause lasting damage – Lib Dems

by Steve Beasant on 10 January, 2018

Responding to reports that Churchill Hospital in Oxford is having to cut chemotherapy services due to staff shortages, Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, Layla Moran, said:

“This is an horrendous situation. Vital treatments that can save or extend life are under threat because of the pressures the NHS faces.

“All of us will have friends and loved ones who have had a cancer diagnosis, and to learn that they might face a delay or a cut back in treatment to alleviate symptoms is appalling.

“Only this weekend the Prime Minister told us that cancelling thousands of operations was ‘part of the plan’ and that the NHS is ‘better prepared’, but this is the reality. Our NHS is struggling from years of underfunding and cuts to staff wages because of the 1% pay cap. And it is patients that suffer, with too few staff able to carry out lifesaving treatments.

“This government has to wake up to the fact that its polices are causing lasting damage. It ended bursaries for nursing last year and applications for courses in nursing and midwifery in England then fell by 23%.

“I will be contacting the hospital and asking questions in parliament as we continue our fight to protect our hospitals, improve conditions for staff and adequately fund the National Health Service.”
