RBS confirm rural customers will lose access to banking

by Steve Beasant on 17 January, 2018

RBS’s closures of rural banking are ill-conceived. Many vulnerable customers will find it increasingly hard to manage their money as a result.

The following article was written by Lib Dem MP Christine Jardine and published today on the Lib Dem Website.

Today, Les Matheson, Chief Executive, Personal & Business Banking for RBS appeared before the Westminster Scottish Affairs committee.

RBS (whose headquarters is in my constituency) has caused controversy in recent months by shuttering many of their rural branches, leaving many unable to access their accounts and struggling to manage their money.

RBS bosses don’t seem to grasp that many of their customers struggle with online or mobile technology.

What’s more with broadband blackspots around RBS bank closures not having been fully assessed, in communities across Scotland people will lose their access to banking.

For a firm that had no hesitation in taking a taxpayer-funded bailout to now be closing branches used by those same taxpayers seems grossly unfair.

RBS needs to do far more to provide consumers with offline alternatives and ensure that rural communities are not left behind.
