Conservatives scramble for extra time after struggling to cope with scale of Brexit

by Steve Beasant on 21 February, 2018

Responding to news that the Conservatives could seek a Brexit transition period of longer than two years, Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable said:

The union flag flying next to the EU flag.

“It is bizarre that the government was so hasty in its invocation of Article 50, but is now scrambling for extra time in transition due to the scale of the task ahead.

“The government is arbitrarily pushing for us to leave the EU on 29 March 2019, at which point it follows that the UK will no longer have a veto over new EU legislation.

“This is just a taste of what is to come once we’re outside the EU, an organisation that determines much of our wealth and commerce as a country, but without any say on the rules.

“There is no value to the transition phase if all the Conservatives are doing is kicking the can down the road.

“That makes it a bridge to nowhere.”
