Commenting on reports that mental health trusts are putting patients through blanket screening as part of Prevent anti-radicalisation measures, former Liberal Democrat Mental Health Minister Norman Lamb, said
“Staff in mental health trusts should be free to focus on providing their patients with the best possible care, not being asked to treat them like criminal suspects.
“It is disgraceful that people suffering with mental ill-health are apparently being singled out for the books they read or their political interests because healthcare professionals are effectively being told to act as counter-terrorism experts.
“The government must urgently rethink the shockingly heavy handed way that Prevent is being used and let NHS staff concentrate on treating, and protecting the welfare of, their patients.”
