Lib Dems: new-build home woes fall on deaf ears

by Steve Beasant on 19 April, 2018

Commenting on an investigation into Bovis Homes, conducted by The Times, Liberal Democrat Housing spokesperson, Wera Hobhouse said:

“Our housing market is not producing the quantity, quality, or type of new homes we need. More than half of new homes have experienced major problems, whilst major house building firms have seen their profits increase by nearly 500% over the past 5 years. This is simply unacceptable – housebuilders cannot be allowed to bury their heads in the sand while residents are living in unsafe and unhygienic conditions.

“The fact that the government is relying on private property developers to solve the housing crisis, yet allowing them to openly flout building regulations is a grave concern. Buyers must be equipped with the resources to hold housebuilders to account, such as a compulsory redress scheme for new homes to ensure that residents’ complaints are no longer allowed to fall on deaf ears.

“The government must be reminded that this crisis is not just about bricks and mortar; it is about ensuring people having a place to call home.”
