Responding to an Electoral Commission report which pushes for urgent action to promote transparency during elections, Liberal Democrat Constitutional and Electoral Reform Spokesperson Lord Tyler said:
“The recommendations of the Electoral Commission require urgent action if further illegal intervention in our democratic process is to be eradicated. After all, another General Election or public vote could occur in a couple of months.
“The Commission urges Parliament to stop illegal foreign interference and funding, to ensure full transparency so voters can know who is targeting them, and to enable them to enforce electoral law effectively.
“Ministers confess they cannot afford any legislative time for these vital reforms, because of Brexit. But, with my Private Member’s Bill awaiting committee stage, this could provide the necessary parliamentary scrutiny and I will work with members of any party to secure this urgently needed legislation.”
