Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Christine Jardine MP has called for a full public inquiry into what British Intelligence agencies knew about US kidnap and torture of suspected terrorists after 9/11.
It follows two reports by the parliamentary intelligence and security committee into the scale of UK involvement.
Ms Jardine said:
“These practices are completely unacceptable and go against everything Liberal Democrats stand for in terms of protecting human rights and zero tolerance towards torture and rendition.
“If it is the case that UK intelligence was aware of this reprehensible practice by a foreign agency then there must be a full inquiry, as was originally intended by David Cameron in 2010.
“It is also essential that this judge-led inquiry looks at questions raised by the report, including the treatment of Libyan dissident Abdul Hakim Belhaj and his wife Fatima Boudchar.
“The Conservative Government, as a matter of urgency, must also reconsider its own policy towards torture and rendition. Theresa May cannot allow the UK to turn a blind eye to these inexcusable practices by anyone.”
