Responding to a speech by Michel Barnier, Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesperson Tom Brake said:
“Today Michel Barnier confirmed what many in the UK have been saying for a long time: there is only a bad deal or worse, none.
“All this debate about a backstop would be unnecessary if the Prime Minister had acted in the national interest and protected our membership of the single market and customs union. This would have made the whole Chequers fudge unnecessary.
“The Conservatives insist they are the party of business but Barnier’s speech shows that Theresa May sits at the helm of an operation that is essentially designed to hurt small and medium sized enterprise.
“The deal Theresa May signs will have such a terrible impact on the country that the Government must give the people the final say.”
