The Liberal Democrats are calling on the Conservative Government to take full responsibility for the knife crime epidemic that is plaguing the UK and urging them to take the initiative and boost funding for police and youth services.
Both Ed Davey, the Lib Dem Home Affairs spokesperson and Tom Brake MP have challenged the Tories this week about their failure to stem the rise in knife crime which has seen a number of fatal stabbings of teenagers on the streets of London over the last few weeks.
The Liberal Democrats are pressing the Government to work towards a policy of zero school exclusions to keep children in school and off the streets and for an end to police funding cuts, so more officers are on patrol to protect residents and ensure greater confidence and safety.
Carshalton & Wallington MP Tom Brake said:
“The Tories aren’t listening to police concerns about knife crime and are refusing to take full responsibility.
“Borough command unit mergers could lead to the adoption of unacceptable one-size-fits-all approaches to beating knife crime, when extremely targeted and ward-based approaches are what is needed.
“The Liberal Democrats demand a public health approach to this devastating epidemic. We call for a reversal in excessive Tory cuts, an increase in visible police patrols, investment in youth services and an end to rushed school exclusions.”
