Showcase of 60s and 70s ladies’ fashion at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre

by Steve Beasant on 3 September, 2014

A new exhibition at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre will transport visitors back to the swinging sixties and groovy seventies with a display of ladies’ costumes from the time.

The exhibition entitled Sleigh Belles draws upon just some of the costumes donated by local textile teacher Joan Sleigh; showcasing some iconic looks from the 1960s and 1970s including mini dresses, platform heels and psychedelic prints.

The exhibition is the fourteenth in the ‘Unlocking the Collection’ series of Heritage Lottery Funded exhibitions and is curated by staff at the museum and Lincs Inspire’s arts development team.

The exhibition is designed to share with visitors just some of the amazing objects currently held in the collection of the North East Lincolnshire Museums Service.

Running concurrently in the same exhibition room at the visitor attraction and at The Grimsby Minster, members of The 62 Group are exhibiting ‘Ebb and Flow’ – a collection of work ranging from printed and stitched textiles to sculptural mixed media and installations.

The group has been working on this exhibition for the past 18 months. It is curated by June Hill who has developed the theme, which makes reference to the rich history of Grimsby and its connection with the seas.

A programme of supporting activities and events will accompany the exhibitions. For more information visit www.thefishingheritagecentre.com or call (01472) 323560.

The exhibitions are free and run from Tuesday, September 9, until Sunday, November 2, 2014.

Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre is open Tuesday to Sunday 10am till 4pm. Grimsby Minster is open from 9:30am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. Please check times before travelling, call (01472) 358 610.
