Following yesterday’s publication of the Brexit select committee report of cross-party MPs recommending Britain’s exit from the EU be pushed back, Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable said:
“It is striking that significant numbers of Labour and Tory MPs who have supported Brexit to date are now looking for a way out in the form of an extended transition
“It is clear that, even if a transition can be agreed this week, there will be little certainty over what happens at the end of the transition and the economy will stutter along in the absence of any clarity about what Brexit actually means
“Seeking a longer transition perpetuates an unsatisfactory state in which we are neither in nor out of the EU but it may be a way of gaining time to rethink the whole Brexit misadventure.”
