Javid must publish Hammond’s Windrush ‘warnings’ to May

by Steve Beasant on 1 May, 2018

Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable yesterday called on the new Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, to publish a Foreign Office document that reportedly warned of the Windrush crisis.

The BBC reported last week that Caribbean ministers alerted Philip Hammond, the then Foreign Secretary, in April 2016 of the possible deportation of immigrants who had spent most of their lives in Britain.

A report based on these concerns was reported to have been handed over to Number 10 and the Home Office, when Theresa May was the Home Secretary.

During an Urgent Question on Windrush today, in which Mr Javid made his first Commons appearance as Home Secretary, Vince Cable said:

“Can I ask if he [Mr Javid] will help clear up the question of who knew what and when about Windrush deportations by publishing in the House of Commons Library the report prepared by the former Foreign Secretary… in 2016 following meetings he had with Caribbean ministers. This was apparently copied to the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary at the time.”

Mr Javid said he would “consider” the request. Mr Cable is writing to Mr Javid asking him to commit to publication of any report.
