Tom Brake Led the Way in Making UK Arms Sales to Saudi Arabia Illegal

by Steve Beasant on 28 June, 2019

Back in September 2015, Tom Brake MP called for the suspension of arms sales to Saudi Arabia because of their indiscriminate and lethal use against civilians in Yemen.

Last week, the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the Campaign Against the Arms Trade and against the Conservative government, ruling UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia illegal.

Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington said:

“This court ruling is historic.

“The Conservatives ignore the injustices that this brutal regime commits. They have exported arms against the objections I and other Liberal Democrats and multiple non-governmental organisations have raised.

“I have repeatedly urged the Government to end arms sales to Saudi Arabia with no avail, even though Saudi Arabia has repeatedly violated international human rights’ law. Last week we put an end to this abuse of power.

“All UK arms sales to the Saudi regime are now unlawful. They must be suspended immediately. This is a fantastic victory for all who have campaigned against this murderous and illegal trade.”
